There’s been so much Twitter news recently that I haven’t wanted to even talk about because… obviously; but we have to talk about this nonsense. Just… what in the world.
To quickly sum it up: Twitter is increasing the cost of Twitter Blue to $8 a month and will include a verification checkmark (among other new features); however to really delve into this decision we need to go deeper.
About a week ago, Elon Musk’s purchasing of Twitter was completed – it is done.
This has caused utter chaos for Twitter and the company’s employees. Executives have been fired, the board of directors has been dissolved and Musk has introduced a litany of new changes that are crunching the dev teams to their absolute limit. It’s new Twitter now and it’s rough out there.
The crunch for dev teams has been so bad that (via The Verge) they’ve been threatened by Musk to have a new Twitter Blue plan and features finished by November 7th or they would be fired:
Employees working on the project were told on Sunday that they need to meet a deadline of November 7th to launch the feature or they will be fired. The Verge
Insanely, all of these events have transpired in under a week. The quote above was from an article from The Verge that alluded to Twitter allowing users to subscribe to a “verification plan” for $20 a month to get a checkmark; however, due to obvious backlash Elon Musk has walked this decision back:
In response to particular backlash from Stephen King of all people, Musk had this to say:
So I guess that settles it. Good thing the new overlord of Twitter is constantly online assuaging aging horror authors. As it currently stands, the $8 a month plan for Twitter Blue that includes a verification checkmark in its benefits is the plan. Musk clarified as much in a later standalone tweet:
Currently the “old” version of Twitter Blue is unavailable as it receives the revamps necessary to turn it into whatever Elon Musk wants it to be, and we don’t have a timeline for re-launch other than “in the coming weeks”.
Does that mean all the engineers, coders, devs and interns part of Twitter Blue will be fired, Elon? You know, since this obviously won’t be finished by November 7th. So far, we’ve been fairly evenhanded on FPT’s coverage with regards to Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter – but it’s truly a hot mess and I wish I could just delete my Twitter account and forget all about it….
But here we are.
