Isn’t it fun when features that used to be free all of a sudden get locked behind a paywall? Yeah. People really love that. Well, buckle up buckaroos because it looks like YouTube has decided that the non-Premium peasants have had it too good for too long! How dare they watch videos in 4K, who do they think they are?
We’re seeing a growing number of YouTube users reporting that the 4K quality option is now locked behind a “YouTube Premium” requirement… uh oh. Let’s take a look here:

Yeah, that doesn’t look good. This is a horrible move on YouTube’s part.
So far, it looks like YouTube could be testing this “feature” with random users, because some of these incidents are going back a full month; YouTube also clearly hasn’t rolled it out to all free users because there would be wide-scale riots in the streets.
We have to assume YouTube is testing the waters here to feel out how upsettispaghetti users are with the 4K quality being locked behind Premium, so we need to make sure YouTube hears that this is a bad idea.
YouTube, come on. This stuff literally never works. If you consider this move – hiding 4K behind a paywall – and then also look at YouTube making some users watch 10 ads in a row, they are going down a nasty road. Nah you right though. The best way to get users to pay for an otherwise free service is to p*ss them off, right?
