Just over a year ago, it was announced that Apple had acquired the beautifully designed weather app Dark Sky and that shut down of the API would be coming at “the end of 2021.”

In a shift of plans, Dark Sky now says the end will be pushed back to “the end of 2022”, one full year longer than was originally suggested. As so, support for its iOS app and Dark Sky website will continue on accordingly.

Because of the acquisition, I suppose it’s not a total loss… for iOS, anyway. Android support was shut off almost immediately when they pulled it from the Google Play Store earlier this year. You can expected to see these cool new features in Apple’s own iOS 15 Weather app this fall:
- Next-hour precipitation notifications
- New animated backgrounds
- New design
The good news for those who still use Dark Sky as their stand alone weather app: you have more time, yay.
The bad news: It’s still coming to an end as all good things do.
